Urge Congress: Save USA Wind Jobs

We encourage you to e-mail your Members of Congress and remind them of the urgency of extending the renewable energy production tax credit (PTC) as quickly as possible.

Your Letter:

As your constituent, I urge you to work with your colleagues to extend the renewable energy production tax credit (PTC) as soon as you resume session after the elections.

With the PTC’s pending expiration, we’ve seen over 3,000 layoffs across the U.S. announced publicly so far.  Navigant Consulting anticipates that 37,000 American wind industry jobs will be lost by early 2013 if Congress does not act promptly to extend the PTC.

The PTC helps developers secure private financing for wind projects.  This triggers business orders to companies throughout the supply chain.  Equipped with the PTC, the wind industry has driven over $15 billion of private investments into the U.S. economy in each of the past five years, and has grown the U.S. manufacturing sector to include nearly 500 wind-related facilities.

Please take this opportunity to put the wind industry back on track – restarting projects, placing manufacturing orders, and keeping the workforce 75,000 people strong – and growing.

America needs homegrown energy resources to power the nation, and with our economy struggling, we’re in dire need of American jobs. Wind energy delivers in both of these areas. The renewable energy production tax credit (PTC) is an effective tool to keep electricity prices low and encourage development of proven clean energy projects. However, the PTC expiration is looming and we need to act fast to protect wind industry jobs.

With the uncertainty of the future of the PTC, businesses are hesitant to plan future U.S. wind projects, American manufacturers have seen a drop in orders, and layoffs have already started. For the purposes of our industry, the PTC has already effectively expired. Half of the U.S. wind industry’s workforce is at stake. To preserve tens of thousands of good-paying manufacturing jobs, the wind industry urgently needs Congress to take action to extend the PTC immediately.

Both Congressional chambers have introduced legislation to extend the PTC this session. In the House, HR 3307 proposes to extend the PTC for four years, and in the Senate, S 2201 proposes to extend the PTC for two years. There is tremendous bipartisan support for this extension, and we must continue to emphasize the urgency of bringing this extension across the finish line.
